Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Hair

articles Aug 27, 2025

PRP injections have become a popular and modern solution for treating various hair problems. This non-surgical treatment relies on stimulating natural cell regeneration and boosting collagen and protein production, which are key components of the skin’s middle layer and contribute to its vitality and radiance.

How PRP Hair Injections Work

  1. A blood sample (about 8 ml) is taken from the patient.
  2. The sample is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the plasma from the rest of the blood components.
  3. A yellowish fluid (the plasma) rich in platelets is extracted.
  4. Calcium is added to the plasma to enhance cell growth and regeneration.
  5. The mixture is then injected into the scalp using very fine needles.

In some cases, a local anesthetic is used to reduce the pain from the needle pricks.

Treatment Duration and Sessions

  • Each PRP session lasts no more than 10 minutes.
  • The patient typically needs 3 to 6 sessions, with 14 to 30 days between each session.
  • Visible results usually start appearing 3 to 6 months after the final session.

Benefits of PRP Injections for Hair

  • Reduces hair loss by stimulating collagen production
  • Promotes the growth of new hair follicles
  • Treats hair breakage and split ends
  • Strengthens and anchors hair follicles in the scalp
  • Rejuvenates the scalp and improves overall scalp health
  • Helps fill in bald spots or thinning areas

Side Effects of PRP Hair Injections

Although considered generally safe, PRP injections may cause mild side effects, which vary from person to person and are usually not serious:

  • Itching at the injection site
  • Mild redness
  • Pain or tingling after the injections
  • Minor bruising of the skin

These symptoms typically fade on their own and can be easily managed with topical creams prescribed by the doctor.
