When Do XERF Results Appear and How Long Do They Last?

Some patients may notice an early change in skin firmness or facial contour following XERF treatment, but the final result should not be judged immediately after the procedure.

XERF uses radiofrequency induced tissue heating. Some early effects may relate to thermal changes in collagen structures, while collagen and tissue remodeling develop gradually during the following weeks and months.

Published clinical studies have reported continued improvement at one and three months. However, current evidence is not yet sufficient to establish one fixed duration of XERF results for every patient.

Are XERF results immediate?

Some early change may be noticeable.

Controlled collagen heating can produce immediate structural changes in some collagen fibers, potentially contributing to an early feeling or appearance of firmness.

However, the immediate post treatment appearance can also be influenced by temporary redness or swelling.

The appearance directly after treatment should therefore not be considered the final result.

What happens during the following weeks?

After the initial thermal effect, tissue remodeling develops gradually.

This process can involve changes in collagen, elastin and other components of the extracellular matrix.

Biological remodeling does not occur in a single day.

Improvement in firmness and skin quality may therefore continue to develop during the following weeks.

What have studies shown after one month?

In a recent prospective multicenter study involving 39 participants, patients underwent two dual frequency RF treatments approximately four weeks apart.

At the 30 day assessment, investigators reported aesthetic improvement on the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale in a substantial proportion of participants, while patient satisfaction was also high.

These findings support measurable short term clinical change, but they do not mean every patient will experience the same degree of improvement.

What happens at three months?

In the multicenter study, clinician assessed improvement at 90 days was greater than at the earlier 30 day assessment within the study population.

A newer retrospective study involving 16 women treated with a single XERF session also reported objective and subjective improvements through three months.

Reported findings included changes in facial laxity and several skin quality measures.

This is consistent with the biological concept that tissue remodeling develops over time.

Is three months the final result?

Not necessarily.

Three months is a follow up point used in current studies rather than proof that all biological change stops at that time.

The current limitation is that XERF specific clinical research is still relatively new and long term follow up remains limited.

It is important to distinguish between evidence showing improvement through three months and a claim that we know exactly what happens after one or several years.

How long do XERF results last?

Current XERF specific evidence does not yet provide sufficient long term clinical data to establish one guaranteed duration such as six months, one year or two years for every patient.

Tissue changes resulting from collagen remodeling may persist, but the visible duration of improvement is influenced by many individual factors.

It is therefore more accurate to describe results as gradual and variable rather than promise a fixed duration.

Why does longevity vary between patients?

Facial and skin aging occur at different rates.

Age, skin thickness, degree of laxity, sun exposure, smoking, genetics, weight changes and lifestyle can all influence how tissues change over time.

Treatment parameters, number of sessions and individual biological response may also influence the clinical result.

Are XERF results permanent?

They should not be described as permanent.

Even if treatment produces meaningful collagen remodeling, natural aging continues.

Skin, collagen, fat, ligaments, muscle and bone continue to change over time.

No non-surgical energy based treatment stops the facial aging process.

Will I need maintenance treatments?

Some patients may choose additional treatment in the future, but there is currently no scientifically established universal XERF maintenance schedule.

Published studies have used different protocols.

One prospective study used two sessions, while another reported improvement after a single treatment.

The need for additional treatment should therefore be determined by reassessment rather than an automatic calendar.

Are two sessions better than one?

Current evidence cannot establish this as a universal rule.

The prospective multicenter study used two treatments and reported favorable short term outcomes.

However, the newer retrospective study also reported improvement following one session.

There is not yet a large randomized trial directly comparing one, two and three XERF sessions to determine the ideal number for every patient.

Can XERF be repeated when the result begins to decrease?

Repeat treatment may be considered in selected patients following reassessment.

The reason for the change should first be identified.

If mild laxity remains the main concern, another treatment may be reasonable. If significant excess skin or deeper structural aging has developed, another treatment approach may be more appropriate.

How should results be assessed?

Standardized photography is important.

Lighting, camera angle, head position and facial expression should be kept as consistent as possible between baseline and follow up photographs.

Comparing an immediate post treatment photograph with a later image taken under different lighting or positioning can exaggerate apparent changes.

Recent clinical research has incorporated standardized photography and objective imaging tools to improve assessment.

Do results vary by treatment area?

They may.

Tissue thickness and structure differ between the cheek, jawline, submental region and neck.

The degree and cause of laxity can also differ between areas.

One region may therefore respond more visibly than another in the same patient.

Does age determine the result?

Age alone does not determine treatment response.

A younger patient may have significant laxity or photodamage, while an older patient may have relatively favorable tissue quality.

Degree of laxity, tissue quality, anatomy and treatment goals are more informative than age alone.

What does current scientific evidence show?

Current direct human evidence involving XERF and dual frequency monopolar RF demonstrates short term improvement through approximately 90 days.

The prospective multicenter study involved 39 participants, while the newer retrospective XERF study involved 16 women.

These are encouraging findings, but the study populations remain small and follow up is relatively short.

It is therefore too early to define a guaranteed long term duration for XERF results.

The bottom line

XERF results do not develop at a single moment.

Some early change may occur after treatment, while collagen and tissue remodeling continue gradually during the following weeks and months.

Current studies demonstrate improvement at one and three months, but long term evidence is not yet sufficient to establish one fixed duration for every patient.

The most scientifically accurate approach is to describe XERF results as progressive and variable and to assess them with standardized photography and clinical follow up rather than fixed longevity promises.

Frequently asked questions

When will I start noticing XERF results?

Some patients may notice early changes, while improvement can continue gradually during the following weeks and months as tissue remodeling develops.

Do results continue improving for three months?

Current studies have demonstrated improvement through three month follow up, although longer term data remain limited.

How many years do XERF results last?

There is currently insufficient long term XERF specific evidence to provide one guaranteed number of years.

Should XERF be repeated every year?

There is no established scientific rule requiring annual treatment. Retreatment should be based on reassessment and individual clinical need.
